Yellow enclosed-cabin gyroplane in flight against a clear blue sky

Glossary

What is lift?

The force a wing produces as air flows over and under it, acting roughly perpendicular to the oncoming air and holding the airplane up against its weight. It grows with airspeed and with angle of attack, right up to the angle where the wing stalls.

That is the whole entry for now. The longer version, with the mechanics and worked examples, is still to be written. See autorotation for how those read once they exist.
