Glossary

What is a short field takeoff or landing?

A takeoff or landing technique for a runway with little length to spare, or with an obstacle at the end, aimed at using the least possible ground distance. The limiting factor is the length available, and it is a required task on the private pilot practical test.

Also called Short field takeoff, short field landing

That is the whole entry for now. The longer version, with the mechanics and worked examples, is still to be written. See autorotation for how those read once they exist.
